During his studies, Victor did not immediately aspire to work for a dredging company or contractor. “I found my previous studies in Mechanical Engineering too technical. I missed the connection between people and technology. I found that connection in Civil Engineering and during my Master’s in Hydraulic Engineering.”
After graduating, he decided to take the plunge and directly contact a recruiter at Van Oord. “I was looking for a broad role at a systems level.” That proactive approach led to several conversations in which he immediately felt a strong connection with the people there. “You can always change your role within a company, but you cannot change the people. That’s why I started at Van Oord as a Risk Manager, later grew into a Project Developer role, and now work as a Tender Engineer.”

As a Tender Engineer, Victor is at the forefront of projects within the Offshore Wind department, specifically in the Foundations and Turbines product line. “In short, we prepare tenders for offshore wind farms for clients such as Eneco, Shell, and Equinor.”
In this dynamic role, he acts as the right hand of the Tender Manager and serves as the central point of contact for colleagues across the project team.
His work is highly cyclical. As soon as a major tender comes in, the first week revolves around structuring information and assembling the right team. After that, his days consist largely of consultations, calls, and process management leading up to the final deadline.
“It is a very broad role in which you need to be a true jack-of-all-trades. You work closely with technical specialists, but you also need to understand financing and coordinate with the Commercial Manager.”
System complexity and sustainability
What drives Victor most in his work is the enormous system complexity. “There is hardly a more direct way to contribute to the sustainability of the future than through offshore wind.”
Preparing a tender is an intensive process in which up to eight different disciplines work simultaneously, ultimately coming together in one coherent story.
He looks back with pride on projects such as Hollands Kust West and Noord, where he experienced the enormous scale and complexity of the offshore industry firsthand.

Alongside the hard work, there is also plenty of room for fun and connection through Jong Van Oord, the annual sailing regatta, and spontaneous sports activities and social gatherings with his international colleagues.
