An internship on our fleet

Van Oord has an impressive fleet of more than 60 vessels operating worldwide. For MBO or HBO students studying Maritime Officer, we offer the opportunity to do an internship on board one of our vessels. Would you prefer to work on a dredging vessel or an offshore vessel? The choice is yours.
During this internship, you will be a full member of the crew. You will participate in the daily operations and have the opportunity to immediately put the theory from your maritime education into practice. You will learn to work in an international and dynamic environment, take on responsibility and discover what life on board is really like.
On board, your internship supervisor will help you get the most out of your internship. During several meetings and evaluation moments, you will discuss your progress and development. You will also have support from the office. You will have a dedicated planner as your point of contact for practical matters, such as flights and vaccinations. And, of course, you will receive an internship allowance every four weeks

First and second year internship

During your first and second internship, you will have the opportunity to indicate your preference for working in the engine room or on the bridge. During your first internship, we will work together to determine which direction suits you best. You can clearly indicate your preference. Many students already have a better idea of which direction they want to take during their second internship. Therefore, be sure to mention your preference during the application process. If possible, we will take this into account when assigning your internships.
Are you still unsure about which direction you want to take during your second internship? No problem. We will look again at your interests, development and the opportunities within our fleet. This way, you can gradually discover which direction suits you best and increasingly determine your own course.

Application procedure

Twice a year, we publish our internship vacancies for the fleet. For internships starting in January/February, the vacancies are published in August. For internships starting in September, the vacancies are published online in February.
After receiving your CV and motivation letter in English, we will send you a short questionnaire. If we think there is a good match, you will be invited to our Selection Day. During the Selection Day, you will have an interview with one of the Pool Managers from our Fleet Department and a Campus Recruiter. In addition to the interviews, several fun activities are scheduled. This gives you the opportunity to get to know Van Oord, our colleagues and the organization in a different way. After the Selection Day, you will be informed as soon as possible whether you have been selected to start your internship on one of our vessels.
Interested in joining our fleet? Apply through our website and follow these steps:
  • Send us your CV and motivation letter in English.
  • Complete the questionnaire you will receive by email.
  • During the specified period, we will let you know whether you have been selected for our Selection Day.
  • Take part in the Selection Day. This takes place at our office in Rotterdam, so make sure to keep this day free in your calendar.
  • In the week following the Selection Day, we will let you know whether you have been selected for our Cadetship programme.

Build a resilient world

For my second internship (nautical), I took on the challenge of working within Van Oord’s offshore division. As a deck officer on a fallpipe vessel, you learn much more than just sailing: you work closely with all departments on board, communicate efficiently, and ensure that every operation is carried out safely. The fast-paced cycle of loading, sailing, and installation in particular allows you to gain practical knowledge incredibly quickly.
