Jasper - Technical Superintendent

From engineer to project lead: Jasper’s career at Van Oord took off fast. As Technical Superintendent, he now works on the latest generation of LNG trailing suction hopper dredgers – and keeps a close eye on how the crew is doing.

After graduating from the Maritime Academy, I started my career as an engineer at a shipping company. But honestly, I soon realised that life at sea wasn’t quite for me. Through a connection, I got in touch with Van Oord and was offered the chance to join a traineeship. During that traineeship, I worked in different departments – from QHSE to offshore – but the Ship Management Department felt like the right fit. The role of Technical Superintendent really appealed to me because the work is much more varied than what I was used to on board.

Major maintenance and a focus on people

As an engineer on board, your main job is to keep the ship running: the technology, production, daily operations. In my current role, there’s a lot more to it. I’m responsible for maintenance, planning, budgeting and thinking ahead. What’s coming up? What challenges do we face?

On top of that, I’m in touch with all kinds of people – on shore and on board. And for me, that human side is just as important as the technical part. That’s why I try to visit the vessels regularly, to hear how things are going – with the ship, but especially with the crew.

Innovation in practice

Right now, I’m working with my team on the Vox Ariane, Vox Apolonia and Vox Alexia – our newest LNG trailing suction hopper dredgers. They’re mainly operating in Europe at the moment, which makes it easy for me to hop on board. But in the future, I’d love to work on a project further away. That’s when you really learn to improvise – because in the Netherlands, everything is arranged quickly, but that’s not the case everywhere.

What the future holds? I have no idea, and that’s exactly what I like about it. Van Oord is such a diverse company – if I wanted to try something new tomorrow, that would be possible. But for now, I’m far from done here. We’ve got amazing vessels, cutting-edge equipment and there’s always something new happening. That makes the work exciting every single day.
