Tobias - Tender Manager

After a few years in shipbuilding, Tobias found exactly what he was looking for at Van Oord: a role that combines engineering, commercial strategy and impact on society. As a Tender Manager, he works on projects that contribute to the energy transition – and to the future of the company.

Before joining Van Oord, I worked as a Tender Manager and Project Manager in shipbuilding. Technically challenging, but I missed the sense of societal relevance. Working on naval vessels and yachts didn’t align with my personal values. I wanted to do something that truly matters.

At Van Oord, I now contribute to offshore wind projects that support the energy transition. That’s much more in line with who I am and what I want to achieve. I’ve had the privilege of a good education – now I want to give something back. Van Oord gives me that opportunity: it’s a family-owned company with vision and long-term thinking, where you get to help build the future.

Managing both content and process

As a Tender Manager, I’m responsible for the entire tender process up to the moment the contract is signed. Together with the Commercial Manager, I form the core team: he focuses on the client relationship, I manage the technical content and the process.

We put together a team of 20 to 30 colleagues – engineers, legal experts, finance professionals – every discipline is involved. My role is to make sure everyone has the right information, the strategy is clear, and we’re all working towards a strong offer. I started out mainly working on tenders in the US. A cable contract for the Ocean Wind project was the first one I helped win as Tender Manager. That’s when you really feel the impact of your work.

Trust and building together

I joined Van Oord when I was 31, and I underestimated how serious the role of Tender Manager really is. You get a lot of responsibility. That was a bit daunting at first, but it suits me. I’m eager to learn and keep developing, for example through training programmes like Catalyst.

What I believe in is leadership based on trust – giving people the space to grow, sharing responsibility, and building something meaningful together. It doesn’t happen by itself, but I work with colleagues who all want the same thing: winning tenders for projects that truly matter. That’s what drives me every day.
