Stephanie Miranda is a Risk Management Engineer at Van Oord. She’s quick-thinking, analytical and always focused on the bigger picture.
After earning my Civil Engineering degree in Mexico, I moved to the Netherlands to do a master’s in Urban Planning at Erasmus University. I worked briefly for the local government in my hometown, but I wanted to grow in a more international environment. I joined Van Oord in 2022 as a trainee, right in the department where I still work. The traineeship included sessions on communication, cultural diversity, innovation and sustainability — a great introduction to the company.

Making risks clear and manageable

As a Risk Engineer, I support tender and project teams by identifying key risks early on. Where are the challenges, and what can we do to avoid problems or delays? It’s all about seeing the full picture, from technical details to finance and legal.

The variety is what makes this job so exciting. Every project is different, I meet new people, ask questions, think in solutions, and keep learning. Sometimes I also work on location, like in Constanța. Being there helps me understand situations faster and contribute more effectively.

Learning and growing

Van Oord really supports personal development. I regularly take courses through LenS — like managing without authority — and I’m about to start one on probabilistic analysis. If I see a good opportunity, I discuss it with my manager. There’s a lot of trust.

My ambition is to grow within the risk team. I used to work mostly on tenders, but now I’m involved in project execution too. One day, I’d love to be part of a full project on site, to experience how it all comes together.

Supportive, direct and open

What I appreciate most is the supportive atmosphere. People help each other out, we do peer reviews, check in over coffee — you’re never on your own.

I’ve also come to really like the Dutch way of communicating: honest, clear, no hidden messages. You can say ‘no’ and it’s totally fine.

I’m part of Young Van Oord and sometimes join events by Rot.Jong, a network for young professionals in Rotterdam. It’s a nice way to meet new people and share ideas.

Van Oord is a place where I can grow and explore. Maybe even in a different team someday. It’s fascinating how one role can look so different depending on the business unit — and that variety keeps me inspired.
