Renske - Category Manager Engineering

Van Oord is a project-based organisation. As a Buyer, you notice this every day: there is always something to do. Today, but also five years from now. This complexity and the opportunities it presents make this the perfect job for Renske van Ek, Category Manager Engineering and Steel Structures.

'I look at the challenges strategically and tactically. Are there issues with major suppliers? And what will we need in five years? For example, I am currently working on a business plan and conducting interviews with people both inside and outside Van Oord. With the results, I can show that by changing steps in this process, we can achieve gains in time, quality, and financial aspects.

I took the initiative for this business plan myself. If I see something that can be improved, I take action on it. Fortunately, I have a supervisor with a lot of experience, and everyone within procurement is very approachable. Asking for help is never a problem here.'

Growing within procurement

Renske has been working at Van Oord for five years now and has already made significant progress. She started as a Buyer and advanced through Team Leader of the Operations Department to her current role. 'I took this step to become stronger in terms of content. To grow within the Supply Chain, you need knowledge and experience. Within my department, you get every opportunity, such as leadership training. They see what you can do and what ambitions you have, and you get the chance to act on it.'

Family business with green ambitions

Renske previously worked for two international shipbuilders. However, Van Oord was always on her list of places she wanted to work: 'Van Oord is a family business, and you can feel that in everything. There is a real passion for what we do. You notice it as you walk through the company: you can drop by anywhere, and everyone is pleased if you show interest in their work. And personally, my heart also races at the sight of the beautiful ships and technology.'

A company that has been around for over 150 years, does it still meet today's challenges? 'We are flexible and adapt to the times and new generations. I can work from home and organise my day: you are given that trust here. If they see that you are doing your best, you are granted a lot of freedom and trust. If you, like me, are a mother of young children but still want to build a career, this is a great company.

And we are not yet the greenest kid on the block, but you now see a significant shift towards sustainability, with considerable investments being made in that area. We are genuinely committed to going green, and this is really driven by the family, making us a bit of an odd one out in the maritime industry. I believe you should work somewhere you can be proud of, and I definitely am!'
