After studying Maritime Technology, Jurrien Schipper knew he wanted to do more than calculations on paper. “At university I loved the simulations and physics, but it was very theoretical. I wanted to see the link with reality, how those numbers actually impact operations offshore.” In 2024, he found exactly that at Van Oord, joining as a hydrodynamic engineer.

In my role as a hydrodynamic engineer, I calculate how vessels move in the water and how waves, wind and other forces affect operations. In simple terms, I determine until which wave heights and periods it’s safe to execute an installation. That means setting up models, running simulations, and making sure everything on board, from loads hanging in a crane to mooring lines, stays in control. It’s detailed, technical work, but with real consequences. The outcomes define ‘workability’, the weather windows where projects can continue safely and efficiently. If my model is off, the project risks delays or extra costs. So accuracy is key. But at the same time, I’m always challenged to optimize, because higher workability means higher production and better results for us and the client.

Choosing Van Oord

It wasn’t coincidence that brought me here. I knew I wanted a role focused on vessel motions. Friends who graduated before me told me about similar positions, and I actively searched for companies with those opportunities. Van Oord stood out, colleagues spoke positively about the culture, and the Gorinchem office was also practical for me, living in Utrecht. Everything fell into place.

What I appreciate most is the working environment. It’s really open, relaxed, and honest. Managers trust me to do my work, and colleagues are always ready to share ideas or challenge my approach. There’s pressure, of course, we need to deliver results, but it’s never overbearing. That balance makes it a good place to grow.

Facing challenges together

The Baltic Power project is a perfect example of the complex challenges we face in our work. My team is working closely with the project team to improve workability and production. I had the opportunity to go offshore, which allowed me to learn directly from real-world conditions and from the vessel crew. Seeing how our simulations relate to reality reinforces the importance of what we do and helps us to continuously improve. I’m proud of the knowledge and in-house tools my team already has, nevertheless we’re always looking for ways to improve, and this project is a great opportunity to do just that.

Looking ahead

For now, my focus is on deepening my expertise. I want to become a real specialist in hydrodynamics. There’s still so much I can learn from my colleagues. In the future, I’d like to combine that knowledge to advise on workability optimization right from the start of a project. But for now, my goal is to keep developing in my field while staying close to the projects.
