Senior Developer

For the Datalab team we are looking for a senior developer. As a senior developer, you will be responsible for the design and development of digital innovations for the 650 engineers in our Engineering & Estimating department, and for projects in execution worldwide.

YOUR IMPACT

As a senior developer, you will focus, within your scrum team, on fit-for-purpose solution designs. You design and assess different solution alternatives and can explain the pros and cons to the product owner and guide junior developers in the development process. You engage with your (internal) clients during sprint reviews and simply in the hallway as we all share the same floor in our Rotterdam office.

Your solutions are architecturally sound, tested and robust and fit the engineering process; sometimes a simple Jupyter notebook suffices, sometimes an elaborate data model and mobile app is required. Your solutions include AIS, activity, metocean, geotechnical, sound and/or sensor data from our fleet; and focus on collection and storage, simulation, prediction and/or advanced analytics.

The “Lab” in Datalab means that you dedicate 20% of your time to the (digital) future of Van Oord. One day a week you are expected to engage in emerging technologies or promising new applications of existing technologies. We only ask that you share your successes and failures regularly.

Our specialised and diverse Datalab team (16 FTE) is responsible for driving data innovations within the business units Dredging & Infra and Offshore Energy.

Datalab is organizationally based within the Engineering & Estimating (E&E) department together with about 15 other disciplines. As both engineering and estimating involve working with tons of data for our tenders and projects, Datalab’s objective is to provide data in the right quality to the right people at the right time. About half of our time is dedicated to E&E disciplines and about half of our time is dedicated to other staff departments, like Survey and Ship Management, and projects in execution. We work closely with our IT department that provides hosting and observability services (i.e. Azure, Kubernetes, Grafana) and basic analytics (e.g. PowerBI).

Datalab’s activities range from project-specific data analytics to industry-standard web applications and REST API’s, and everything in between. It is key to Datalab’s success that with a relatively limited open-source stack (i.e. PostgreSQL, Python, JupyterLab, Grafana) we provide pragmatic solutions to practical problems and enable engineers to change the way they work.

Examples of recent developments are portals to collect, analyse and distribute the geotechnical, coastal and environmental engineering data of our projects; the sensory (IoT) and logistics data of our fleet. We provide platforms for simulation and prediction (machine learning) and strategic market analysis, including our Climate Risk Overview. Often our data has a GIS or timeseries component.

Datalab was founded 10 years ago, has a deliberate open-source policy and is geographically based in Rotterdam.

Your responsibilities

  • Design and assess data solution alternatives with a focus on architectural soundness, quality and robustness, and communicate the pros and cons with the Product Owner and other developers.
  • Develop fit-for-purpose data solutions for our Engineering & Estimating department and projects in execution worldwide.
  • Train and guide junior developers in the development process and review their work, and support them in their growth into a senior position.
  • Explore new technologies and new applications of existing technologies.

Job requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who can design and develop pragmatic solutions to practical engineering problems, but with a keen eye for architectural design, quality and robustness. A team player who can, together with our other senior developer, challenge and grow a young team and make informed decisions on solution alternatives.

We look for:

  • MSc degree in engineering.
  • Affinity with our business as marine contractor.
  • At least 6 years relevant experience with data engineering (and science).
  • Demonstrable fluency in Python and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with Kubernetes.
  • Excellent command of the English language in a technical environment, both written and spoken.

We offer

Working in an international, high demanding and dynamic organisation, with the possibility to truly have impact on our business, people and environment. We offer a complete package with excellent secondary employment benefits. The package includes among other things:

  • A salary that matches your responsibilities and experience;
  • 32 leave days of which a max. of 7 days can be appointed as collective leave days;
  • Pension scheme;
  • Variable bonus;
  • Extensive learning and (personal) development possibilities;
  • An adequate travel allowance;
  • Collective health insurance (optional);
  • Flexible working hours.
