The position

As the HR Director for the Ship Management Department (SMD), you hold a key role in shaping the department's People Strategy, influencing business outcomes globally. Partnering closely with the SMD leadership, you drive initiatives as leadership development, talent management, and organizational effectiveness, impacting over 2,300 employees worldwide. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead HR initiatives in a dynamic, international matrix organization, fostering personal and professional growth while contributing to the strategic success of the department and the broader Van Oord organization. 

As HR Director SMD, you own the People Strategy for the department, whether people working in our offices, on our yards or on our equipment allocated all over the world. The SMD HR Director is the primary contact point for HR related matters for the director of the SMD department and the members of the management team (MT). 

As HR Director SMD, you partner with the sub departments of SMD to influence the people and talent agenda to drive business outcomes and goals. This senior leadership position plays a pivotal role in the success of the SMD department as the execution of Van Oord HR agenda. You partner with the director and the MT to discuss strategic business matters, people prioritization, leadership development, succession planning, talent management, coaching matters, effective team composition, performance, employee engagement, organizational effectiveness and change management. You advise and coach leaders on driving the organizational values and culture. 

You drive the adoption of the HR operating model within the business, focussing on aligning and integrating the crew department within corporate HR and ensuring MT members feel they are well supported by the global HR Function, including the HR Centres of Expertise (CoEs). You include HR data & people analytics in decision-making processes. You work closely with the CoEs, Chief People Office (CPO) and with the other HR Directors/ Managers, HR Business Partners and HR Advisers to promote collaboration across functions and cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge-sharing. You lead a HR team of HR Business Partners and HR advisors.

YOUR WORKPLACE

As HR Director for SMD, member of the HRLT and member of the SMD MT, you will be co-responsible for leading the SMD-HR department and designing as well as executing the overall strategy of HR and of the SMD department. 

Van Oord’s SMD performs activities concerning ship management, in large maintaining adequate functioning of het floating equipment in such a way that continuity and safe use is ensured. The technical performance of its fleet is according required company standards and policies. Furthermore SMD is obliged to work according to various rules, requirements and laws, both national as international. 

SMD consists of 2.300 employees working on different internal and external international payrolls, divers labour conditions and directly or indirectly hired by Van Oord. In this role your report to the CPO and to the managing director SMD. 

Your responsibilities

  • You have a leading role in the department management team, being co-responsible for steering the HR department (approximately 300 staff and 2000 crew employees) as a whole from a long-term/strategic and global perspective, not limited to the HR agenda.
  • You shape and drive the corporate People Strategy with a business perspective and global mindset. Working/collaborating with the Human Resources Leadership team (HRLT) on the People Strategy and the annual HR/people plan. 
  • You shape and deliver the People Strategy and HR/people plan in SMD department, using a.o, the Directors Information Dashboard. Providing leadership on business related HR projects and is country responsible from an HR Business partner perspective for a number of countries, e.g. UAE, Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore. 
  • You provide leadership on department related HR projects. Co-developing HR plans for SMD and ensuring HR solutions are sustainable and relevant. Advising and collaborating on the design and implementation of HR programs / projects, ensuring programs/projects are relevant to your department. 
  • You actively consult and provide solutions related to workforce, employee engagement, performance management, retention, sickness management, talent and organizational culture to senior business leaders. 
  • You provide leadership and coaching to senior business leaders and own HR team members.

  • You are an experienced HR Director and have gained your experience in a matrix organisation.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree, preferably specialised in HRM or occupational & organisational psychology;
  • You are fluent in English, other language skills do help;
