Cost Engineer Newbuild

The position

As a Cost Estimator, your challenge lies in developing and drawing up cost estimates for the Van Oord fleet. This includes new ships, project equipment, modifications, conversions and major repair and maintenance work. Based on your specialism, you advise the new construction teams on the most cost- and time-efficient solutions. You will not only make cost calculations, but you will know all the ins and outs of what is needed at shipyards, at equipment suppliers and how these projects are realised.

Your workplace

Van Oord's Ship Management Department (SMD) carries out all ship management activities. Together with the team of the Technology department within SMD, you work on versatile projects all over the world to deliver the best (new) assets. You will be trained by the specialist within this team in the field of cost budgets at SMD. You will be working from our office in Rotterdam. 

Your responsibilities

  • You coordinate with relevant departments such as Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Purchasing, Project Management and Fleet Management with the aim of preparing accurate and valid cost and time estimates;
  • You are able to establish a valid scope of work;
  • During the execution phase of a project you participate where necessary;

Job requirements

As a Cost Estimator at SMD you have the ability to work in a structured way and to distinguish between different estimation classes. You know how to keep the various stakeholders informed with your communication skills. In addition, you meet the following requirements:

  • You have at least 5 years of experience in making cost calculations in the maritime sector;
  • You have knowledge of ships, systems and equipment on board and you know which technical and operational disciplines are required to build and operate them;
  • You are proficient in the English language in word and writing.
